5 Tips to Stay Hydrated This Summer

August 31, 2024

You may have heard that the best hydration tip is to drink more water. However, this might not be the case, strictly speaking. From vitamin and nutrient supplementation to harnessing the power of our bovine brethren, these summer hydration tips can help unlock your best hydration game.

5 Tips to Stay Hydrated and Beat the Heat

Hydrating for health is a crucial consideration, especially in the summer months. Here are five tips to stay hydrated this summer.

Use a Humidifier Indoors

An indoor humidifier is a great way to stop our skin from drying out and/or aging less gracefully. Even in the summer, humidifiers can add beneficial moisture to the atmosphere inside our homes, keeping flaky skin, chapped lips, dry throats, and other dry air symptoms at a minimum (Medical News Today).

Carry Fluids With You

Outdoor enthusiasts know the importance of bringing more water on a hike than they think they’ll need. We could all learn something from this mentality. Cold mountain springs dry up unexpectedly and water fountains break from time to time. Therefore, banking on a hydration source where you’re going can lead to disappointment. Even if these things don’t happen, our proximity to hydration sources should be also be a consideration of practicality. I.e. How often am I really going to want to get up and walk across the office to visit the water cooler? Whether we’re hitting the gym or stepping into the cubicle, we should never underestimate the impact that readily available fluids can have on our ability to follow through when it comes to hydration goals.

Another surefire way to increase water consumption is to buy a fun water bottle. Pick up one in your favorite color if that sparks your joy! Decorate it with cool stickers! The combination of a small financial investment and an appealing design can actually make a remarkable difference in one’s willingness to hydrate adequately throughout the day.

Go Beyond H2O

While everyone should always drink plenty of water, there are additional ways to hydrate without exclusively drinking water.

For instance, researchers from St. Andrews in Scotland found that milk is actually more hydrating than water. This is apparently due to the fact that milk “contains the sugar lactose, some protein[,] and some fat, all of which help to slow the emptying of fluid from the stomach and keep hydration happening over a longer period (CNN Health).” If you needed a reason to add that extra splash of milk to your cereal, you now have it. On top of this, “milk also has sodium, which acts like a sponge,” contributing to better water retention and less urination.

So, while excess sugar and sodium intake is certainly wise to avoid in general, moderate consumption of some sugars and sodium may serve a valuable function in the quest for healthy hydration. For further evidence, look no further than electrolyte-heavy sports drinks like Gatorade and Powerade, which are staples of the sports world for long-term hydration during athletic events and training sessions.

Exercise Restraint With Diuretics

A diuretic is a substance that triggers the body to urinate more when consumed. If not enjoyed in moderation, diuretics can sneak up on us, gradually depleting the body of needed fluids. Examples of diuretics include coffee, black tea, and alcoholic drinks.

Big-time caffeine lover? Don’t tear your hair out over this — there’s no reason to go tossing out your Keurig just yet. If starting the day without three cups of espresso sounds like a fate worse than death, one way to offset some of that fluid loss could be to simply drink a glass of water in between each refill!

Try an IV!

Did you know that drinking fluids is not the most efficient hydration method? Frankly, it’s not even close!

For instance, vitamin C is one of the best vitamins for hydration, but the comparatively low bioavailability of OTC supplements means our bodies often can’t actually use much of the vitamin C in these capsules.

IV infusions, on the other hand, provide 100% bioavailability. This ensures that our bodies get to utilize all of the nutrients they receive. From the Trimune Booster (vitamin C) and Reviver IV (Myers’ Cocktail) to our other healthy concoctions and customized IV hydration cocktails, our team at Rejuvenate You offers the best hydrating fluids and nutrients for your individual lifestyle and health goals.
